Why "how much glucosamine" isn't a flat bracket answer
Most glucosamine dosing charts, on bottles, in forum answers, everywhere, use flat weight brackets: "under 10 lbs, give X; 10–24 lbs, give Y." That's simple to print, but it means a 2 lb dog and a 9 lb dog get the same dose, even though the 9 lb dog is more than 4x heavier. The same happens at every bracket boundary. Dosing by weight, continuously, is more precise, and it's the approach vets actually use when calculating a dose for an individual dog rather than reading it off a label.
How glucosamine dosage actually works
Glucosamine dosing for dogs is generally expressed as mg of glucosamine per kg (or lb) of body weight per day. Sources converge on a maintenance range of roughly 20–30 mg/kg/day, with the lower end of that range being a reasonable, conservative starting point. Clinical evidence for glucosamine-chondroitin in dogs is real but measured rather than dramatic. A JAVMA-published trial comparing glucosamine-chondroitin sulfate to a standard NSAID found meaningful improvements in pain, weight-bearing, and disease severity by day 70 of treatment. However, the AVMA's own broader assessment of pet supplements describes the benefit as modest, and the association rescinded its earlier supportive policy on glucosamine in 2016 due to a lack of strong efficacy data (not safety concerns). Worth setting expectations accordingly: this is a supplement that may help, not a guaranteed fix.
Form matters: glucosamine comes as either glucosamine HCl or glucosamine sulfate, and the two aren't interchangeable milligram-for-milligram; HCl is a more concentrated salt form. Small dogs: why "0.x pumps" isn't a real instruction
If you've got a toy breed, you may notice the calculator gives you a very small number, sometimes less than half a pump. This is the exact same practical problem we address on the fish oil page: fractional pump amounts aren't something you can measure accurately at home.
The good news: unlike fish oil, glucosamine has a wide margin of safety, and the liquid's single pump (108mg) is actually the most practical minimum unit available, smaller than the powder's minimum scoop (312.5mg). For dogs under about 12 lb, where the calculated target is less than a full pump, one full pump is a reasonable, safe rounding-up rather than trying to measure a fraction of a pump. For dogs under 5 lb specifically, talk to your vet about whether supplementing at all is appropriate at that size.

What about chondroitin?
